Very Personal!
Very Personal
Psalm 139 is very personal. David paints for us the intimacy he feels toward God. There is a depth here understanding the miracle and comfort of God’s absolute sovereignty. In verse 13, David walks us through the mystery of God’s mastery over the gestation process of life itself.
“For You formed my inward parts; You covered (wove) me in my mother’s womb” (Psalm 139:13).
“Formed” (Heb. “kanita”) implies something originating from God.
David comprehended God’s cause and effect. He was saying, “You God, have created. This is something that only You can do. Only You can make through divine action someone from the mysterious substance of procreation.”
“My inward parts” (Heb. “chilyotai”), literally “of a physical organ.” Often translated “kidney” which is a Middle Eastern way of saying “heart.”
In the West we say, “I love you with all my heart.” What we are actually implying is, “I love you with my whole being, every part of me.” In Middle East one may say, “I love you with all my “kidney.”
David contemplated, “You formed my heart, or my emotions, my affections, and my conscience. You have created my mind. Therefore, my thoughts do not surprise You. I am the way that I am O Lord, for You have made me this way. I am ‘wired’ in a certain manner. I am unique, created in your image.”
“Covered (Wove)” (Heb. “tesukkeni”) means “You have “covered” me, or “lay over” me. You who “knits” or “weaves together.” You “joined together” and “fashioned” me.
David considered, “Lord, you have created me part by part. You have knitted me, and protected me through the gestation process. You wove together and created my embryo. You know every part of me. Nothing is hidden from you. You made me exactly the way I am. I am a miracle created by your Holy design. I have significance.”
“Womb” (Heb. “beveten”) meaning “In the womb of my mother.”
David understood, “I was part of her body and yet it was my body, her blood, my blood, her flesh, my flesh. You have woven together bone and flesh. You have created my soul within my mother’s womb. You saw me and knew me even in her womb. You are everywhere present, all knowing, and all powerful.”
Points to Ponder:
- God knew you would be alive at this hour.
- God fashioned you, giving you the ability to face life-challenges that you may be experiencing.
- You are no mistake – God makes no mistake!
- Each day, we start anew.
- Each morning we can renew our commitment to the Lord (Lamentations 3:22, 23).
- God will provide (YHVH-Jireh) and God is Almighty (El-Shaddai).
Shalom and Blessings,
