She’eilot – u – Teshuvot –Means Questions and Answers.
(Shee’ ee – loht oo T’shu – voht)
Three days later they finally discovered him in the Temple, sitting among the religious teachers, listening to them and asking questions. All who heard him were amazed at his understanding and his answers (Luke 2:46, 47, NLT)
Education is important to Jewish families. Children are given the best opportunities according to their parent’s ability to provide.
The students are expected to ask questions regarding the subject discussed, and to answer questions given by the parent or teacher. This is what 12-year-old Jesus is doing in the Temple compound as He speaks with leading rabbis of the day.
God authorizes parents to teach their children scripture. This is not a request, rather, it is a command to do so. Essentially, it is a privilege and blessing to do so.
“And you must commit yourselves wholeheartedly to these commands that I am giving you today. Repeat them again and again to your children. Talk about them when you are at home and when you are on the road, when you are going to bed and when you are getting up. (Deuteronomy 6:6, 7, NLT).
Parents, you teach your children and ask them questions as to what they understand, and then encourage them not only to answer, but also to ask questions. And, in so doing, you are teaching your children that the Word of God is “sweet” and are preparing them to face life’s challenges with wisdom.
“How sweet your words taste to me; they are sweeter than honey. Your commandments give me understanding;
no wonder I hate every false way of life:(Psalm 119:103 – 104, NLT)
Take a few moments each day and teach your children the ways of God, by using She’eilot – u – Teshuvot – questions and answers.
