Simchat Torah, Rejoicing in the Law!

Simchat Torah, Rejoicing in the Law:

Simchat Torah, or Rejoicing in the Law celebrates the conclusion of weekly readings through the Torah (the five books of Moses) in the Synagogue.  The conclusion is by reading the last chapters of Deuteronomy and the beginning of Genesis. The annual reading of the Torah begins once again.

Parading the Torah Scroll
There is a great celebration parading the Torah Scroll up and down the aisles within the Synagogue, or in the streets, dancing, singing and rejoicing.

Greater Than Ourselves
Each Jewish Holy Day reminds us of something greater than ourselves, for example:
Passover – God has saved us.
Rosh Hashanah – God has called us.
Yom Kippur – God has covered (atonement) us.
Sukkot – God shelters us with His presence and provision.

**Simchat Torah – God guides us through His Word.

Highest Form
The rabbis believe that study of the scripture is “The highest form of Worship.”  When you pray, you speak to God.  When you read Holy Scripture, you keep quiet and let God speak to you.

Like the Shema, “Hear, O Israel! The LORD is our God, the LORD is one!” (Deuteronomy 6:4).  Shema (“sh’-mah”) means ‘to hear’. But it also means to obey and to take action. So, to hear God is to obey God—and to obey God is to hear God.

God meets you there as you are transported back to the Galilee, Jerusalem, and Sinai. It is there where God “kisses” you with the “aha” moment, and it is there that you submit to, and worship the Ancient of Days (SOS 1:2).   “For Ezra had set his heart to study the Law of the LORD, and to do it and to teach his statutes and rules in Israel” (Ezra 7:10).

Like in the Synagogue, and in some churches who have an annual reading cycle of Holy Scripture, may all who are believers, read scripture consistently throughout the year and “rejoice” in the journey.
