I couldn’t protect you!

Arriving at the Kibbutz, the cousin of Yarden met us as we walked together toward the lobby.  A few moments later Yarden walks in.  His eyes were tired, as he extended his hand to me.

We exchanged cordial introductory comments, I introduced Louise, and then the heartfelt conversation began.

I first said “tanchumin” (tahn-koo-meen) which means condolences/comfort. This word does not have a direct English translation.  One short-simple Hebrew word is enough and has profound meaning for someone experiencing the loss of a loved one.

For 484 days Yarden was held captive in Hamas dank tunnels.  Shiri, 32, Yarden’s wife, along with his two sons, 4-year-old Ariel and 9-month-old Kfir were also taken captive on October 7, 2024.

Yarden was released from captivity on February 1, 2025.  The bodies of Shiri, Ariel, Kfir, who were brutally murdered, were released February 20, 2025, and buried together in a single casket.  Thousands lined the streets in Israel out of respect, honor, as together they mourned.

I shared with Yarden, as I teach, I tell his story, and encourage people to remember the names of Shiri, Ariel, and Kfir.

Speaking at the funeral, Yarden tells his sons and wife, “I’m sorry, I couldn’t protect you all.” Yarden needs our prayers for healing and comfort.

Adonai is “close to the brokenhearted; he rescues those whose spirits are crushed” (Psalm 34:18, NLTN).

The connection to Yarden was made by an Israeli friend who worked in the Knesset.

We now have a new friend in Israel. Yarden desires to help children.  ITM feeds children.  ITM will partner with Yarden in his desire to help children.

**Yarden asked not to publish the photos on social media (Facebook, “X”, etc.) as it is becoming difficult for him.
